Performance of Celox

Celox™ was originally developed to assist military medics with some of the worst wounds imaginable. It’s been to Afghanistan and Iraq and helped save many lives.

It can stop lethal femoral artery bleeding with 3 minutes compression and stop more minor bleeding in seconds.

When mixed with blood, Celox™ forms a gel like clot in 30 seconds.

Celox works by bonding with red blood cells and gelling with fluids to produce a sticky pseudo clot. This clot sticks well to moist tissue to plug the bleeding site. Celox does not set off the normal clotting cascade, it only clots the blood it comes directly into contact with.

Celox’s mode of action has a number of benefits:

  • Celox’s™ clotting ability has been proven to work in the presence of common anti-coagulants such as warfarin.

The U.S. Navy has tested CELOX in a wound model designed to simulate a major battlefield wound with massive arterial damage. Their work was carried out independently and showed that even in this extreme situation, CELOX could reliably stop bleeding, reduce blood loss and save lives. Celox™ was the only product to give 100% survival. It gave robust, reliable clotting with no rebleeding and clearly outperformed its rivals. Details of this study were published in the Journal Academic Emergency Medicine Jan 08, Pages 74-81.

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery recently published case studies of Celox’s clinical use. The Journal described the successful use of Celox on a knife wound to root of the right hand side of the neck and from post operative bleeding complications from bypass graft surgery. Details of this study were published as ‘A New Hemostatic Agent: Initial Life-Saving Experience With Celox (Chitosan) in Cardiothoracic Surgery’, Russell W.J. Millner, Alan S. Lockhart, Helen Bird and Christos Alexiou, Ann Thorac Surg 2009;87:13-14.

How It Works

Pouring Celox into a wound prevents blood loss by forming a gel like clot as the Celox binds to the surface of red blood cells.
